STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway – Opening Betting Odds
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series opening odds have been released for this Sunday’s STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway. As expected, Jimmie Johnson opened as the overwhelming favorite at just over 3-1 odds with teammate Jeff Gordon shortly behind at near 6-1 odds. Both Johnson and Gordon lead all active drivers with 8 grandfather clocks. Of course the grandfather clock is one of the most unique trophies in all of sports, which has been given to each Martinsville race winner since the 1960’s. Only a handful of drivers in this Sunday’s field have ever put their hands around the prestigious Martinsville grandfather clocks and it will be interesting to see if that trend continues.
Recent history may suggests otherwise if you consider NASCAR has watched 5 different drivers go to victory lane through the first 5 races of the season. Will another new driver capture the checkered flag this Sunday or will we have our first repeat winner of the year? If you skim through the opening odds below, you will notice that the typical front runners at Martinsville have rather short odds compared to normal race weeks. We would never suggest taking a driver with odds currently as low as Johnson despite his completely dominate track record at the half mile paperclip.
Our advice would be to wait out the odds this week as it relates to the favorites as most will likely get better after qualifying. However, there is still some value on the board nevertheless. Tony Stewart has 3 Martinsville victories throughout his 29 career starts and has put together strong runs over the last few weeks. Stewart has posted back to back Top 5 finishes and is currently receiving 23-1 odds to win this Sunday’s STP 500 which is some solid value. Matt Kenseth also has some serious value at 18-1 odds. Kenseth has never won at Martinsville Speedway but has run well in recent trips to Virginia. Kenseth has posted two top 5 finishes in his last 4 starts at Martinsville and owns the 4th best average driver rating over those 4 starts. Much of the same can be said for Dale Earnhardt Jr as well. Junior is currently listed at 17.5-1 odds and has the 6th best average finish (13.18) of all active drivers. It would not be a big surprise if any of those guys found victory lane this week. Take a look at the rest of the opening odds for the STP 500 below as they will surely change throughout the remainder of the week until the green flag drops at approximately 1:18pm eastern this Sunday.
