The final race of the season in the Camping World Truck Series will take place Friday night in the Ford Ecoboost 200. The green flag is scheduled to wave at 8:18pm (EST) and then 200 miles will decide a number of point’s championships. The most notable title that will be decided is the Camping World Truck Series driver’s championship. Matt Crafton currently holds a 25 point advantage over Ryan Blaney and is nearing his 2nd straight series title. While we keep an eye on all the championship scenarios, we are focused on the most important aspect of Friday’s 200 mile race which is making profit. Obviously the points titles that will be up for grabs Friday night will carry some of the storylines into the Truck Series finale. Matt Crafton simply needs to avoid disaster and can clinch the driver’s championship with a 21st place finish or better. However 2nd place Ryan Blaney is in position to spoil Crafton’s bid at a 2nd straight championship if any unforeseen circumstances arise. Blaney has not contended for wins recently in Truck Series competition but he has run fairly decent finishing in the top 5 in 3 of his last 4 starts. However the young talent has been strong at Homestead-Miami in past Truck Series races and we feel that he may be a factor Friday night as well. Blaney started on the pole last year in this race, led 67 laps, and brought home a runner-up finish behind Kyle Busch.
Obviously Busch is the overall favorite to win the Ford Ecoboost 200 just as he is anytime he suits up in Truck Series competition. However do not be surprised if Blaney or Crafton is able to get up front and contend for the victory. Crafton was fastest in the first practice and Blaney topped the charts in final practice Thursday afternoon. Crafton has been strong on all the 1.5 mile speedways this season. While some may feel that Crafton will race conservative for championship purposes, he proved last week that he is racing for wins with some aggressive driving at Phoenix. As long as Crafton avoids a crash, mechanical failure, or some serious misfortune, the championship is already his. Therefore expect the #88 team to be racing for a win when the green flag drops.
Among the other storylines that will grab some attention Friday night include the Rookie of the Year honors and the Owner’s Championship. Kyle Busch Motorsports and the #51 truck currently lead the Owner’s Championship by 18 points over the #88 truck from owner Rhonda Thorson. Busch will control his destiny in the #51 truck tomorrow night and simply needs a 14th place finish or better to wrap up the title. Obviously Busch will be looking for a victory which is the reason he runs in these races and he is currently listed as an overwhelming favorite to take the checker flag at Homestead.
Another storyline to keep your eye on Friday night includes the Rookie of the Year title. Ben Kennedy currently has a 3 point advantage over Tyler Reddick in the Rookie of the Year standings. Therefore it is still anybody’s guess who is going to win that battle. So far this weekend, Reddick has been really impressive in terms of speed finishing 2nd in both practices. If you are looking for a few other guys for dark horse consideration whether it is for the win or in matchups, consider both Jeb Burton and Darrell Wallace Jr. Wallace Jr has been strong everywhere this season and Burton has really come on strong during the 2nd half of the year while flying under the radar. Both drivers should hold value in match-ups against other mid-range drivers.
