Tomorrow afternoon the green flag will drop on the 19th race of the season at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in the Camping World RV Sales 301. So far this season the Sprint Cup Series’ has had 11 different race winners and time is quickly running out for some of the sport’s biggest names like Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth, and Kasey Kahne to capture a victory to secure their spot in the Chase. Meanwhile drivers like Jimmie Johnson, Brad Keselowski, and Kyle Busch are looking to add another win to their resume to boost their point’s position at the start of the Chase. Let’s take a look at our Camping World RV Sales 301 race picks as we provide our thoughts towards the drivers that could find their selves in victory lane Sunday afternoon.
The first thing that most bettors should know heading into Sunday’s event is that several guys have the capability of winning this race. Normally when the Sprint Cup Series visits the shorter tracks, only a handful of drivers appear on our winning radar. However, New Hampshire Motor Speedway is a much different type of short track. The 1.058 mile flat oval in Loudon gets extremely slick and it is tough to get the right balance dialed in on the setup. As a result, the Sprint Cup Series has seen 12 different winners in the last 12 races in Loudon including last season’s surprise Camping World RV Sales 301 winner Brian Vickers.
Looking back on the history at New Hampshire, several drivers have found the key to success and typically run well. Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch, and Ryan Newman all have 3 wins each at Loudon. Denny Hamlin and Clint Bowyer are next in line with multiple wins. However, the guy that leads all active drivers with 4 wins in the Sprint Cup Series is Jeff Burton. Burton will be making just his 2nd start of the season this week in Loudon. As most are aware, Burton is running a limited 2014 schedule before he retires completely and moves to the Broadcast booth in 2015. New Hampshire Motor Speedway is Burton’s best track but I doubt you will see him contend this weekend due to the time he has been outside of the driver seat this year along with the fact he will be running in below average equipment in the #66 Toyota for car owner Jay Robinson.
As for the guys that are primed to contend on Sunday, names like Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, and Jimmie Johnson just scream for attention. Busch won the pole for the Camping World RV Sales 301. The 2006 Loudon winner finished 3rd in the first practice session on Friday and it will be interesting to see how the #18 performs in race trim. Hamlin and Johnson have both shown speed all week especially in race trim. Hamlin finished in the top 5 in both of Saturday’s practices and the #11 team has been working diligently on their short track program. Considering Hamlin’s strengths at Loudon and flat race tracks in general, he should be a guy to deal with if the #11 car is close on setup. As for the #2 car of Brad Keselowski, he has never visited victory lane at New Hampshire. However, that could easily change tomorrow afternoon. Keselowski bested the field in both of Saturday’s practices and also had the fastest 10 lap consecutive average in the final session. Keselowski was really happy with that #2 car after Saturday’s sessions and that may be a telling sign of things to come.
Another couple of guys that bettors may want to consider as longshots tomorrow include Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray. Both cars have shown a lot of speed this week. McMurray stated earlier this week that the Chip Ganassi Racing cars are running as well as they have all season in terms of speed which has shown on the speed charts this weekend. Larson has had a tough stretch of races over the last 3 weeks but he likes New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Larson’s proved in the Nationwide Series race earlier today that he can mix it up with the best guys in the sport despite his limited experience. Neither driver has won at Loudon which fits into our trend of 12 different winners in the last 12 New Hampshire races. Perhaps both teammates are worth a look for this Sunday.
