The Camping World Truck Series will kick start a double header afternoon today with the running of the Careers for Veterans 200 at Michigan International Speedway. The Truck Series race today at Michigan will be the first of two races in NASCAR’s top touring series this afternoon. After the Truck Series concludes in Michigan, the Xfinity Series will take the green flag at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course at approximately 3:48PM (EST). Last year in this race, Johnny Sauter capitalized on fuel strategy to score his lone victory of 2014 in a race that feature just 1 caution flag and 85 straight green flag laps to close out the 200 mile event. Michigan International Speedway has a reputation for producing fuel mileage situations accompanied with long green flag runs so there is a chance that strategy could play an important factor once again this afternoon. Among the popular names suiting up for today’s race, include names like Kyle Busch, Austin Dillon, and Ryan Blaney along with all the Truck Series regulars.
Obviously Sprint Cup drivers Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon are the two major favorites for today’s 200 mile race. However, neither Busch nor Dillon has ever scored a win at MIS. Busch has scored 4 different runner-up finishes in his 8 starts while Dillon’s best finish is 5th in 3 starts. On Friday, Matt Crafton topped the charts in final practice followed by Daniel Hemric in the #14 car. There was a pretty solid buzz around Hemric following both of Friday’s sessions. The 24 year old, who keeps getting better with each race, put the #14 car on top of the charts in the first practice of the day and followed it up P2 on the boards in final practice.
From a practice and speed standpoint, the field appeared pretty competitive amongst the leaders with nobody really standing out as overly dominate. Michigan’s track size not only produces a ton of speed with drafting effects but it also brings into play a lot of strategy with track position. With so many cars appearing to be on a level playing field, it definitely opens the door for a possible “surprise” winner this afternoon. Therefore, do not be afraid to pull the trigger on a long shot driver for today’s race because Michigan is a track that can produce some surprise winners. In the Truck Series, there have been 10 different winners over the last 10 races at MIS and today we could easily have an 11th different winner.
