Today Dale Earnhardt Jr put another exclamation mark on his impressive 2014 campaign by winning the GoBowling.com 400 at Pocono Raceway. Earnhardt had a fast car and loomed inside the top 10 all afternoon. Crew chief Steve Letarte was able to get the #88 out in front of guys like Jeff Gordon and Kurt Busch following the final pit-stop with a risky short pit call. Junior was then able to work his away around Kevin Harvick and Greg Biffle late in the race as those cars tried to stretch their fuel strategy to the end. After a late restart with less than 5 laps to go, Harvick attempted to dive under the #88 a few times in a close battle for the race lead. However, Junior was able to hold Harvick off to complete the season sweep at Pocono and earn his 3rd victory of the season. Junior is now tied with Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson for the most wins in 2014 and now owns the Sprint Cup Series points lead with 5 races remaining before the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
The win added a promising outlook to Junior’s breakout season as the Chase for the Sprint Cup approaches. Earnhardt’s last multiple win season came back in 2004 but it appears the #88 team will give Junior the best chance of his career to make a run at his first Sprint Cup Championship. If you look at the stats, nobody has run better than the #88 this season nor in the past few months. Junior has compiled top 10 finishes in 10 of his last 12 starts. During that stretch, Junior has also recorded a pair of Pocono wins and 6 Top 5 finishes. If the #88 team can keep this pace, perhaps it will not be the last scene of NASCAR’s most popular driver in victory lane.
From the betting side of things, the GoBowling.com 400 was a pretty tough race. Several of the expected drivers that would contend got caught up in accidents and mistakes on pit road. On lap 117, Denny Hamlin got loss coming off turn 3 which caused a big pileup involving 13 cars. The accident ended the day for drivers like Tony Stewart, Brad Keslowski, Matt Kenseth and others. Additionally drivers like Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards suffered damage that hindered their afternoon. Harvick and the #4 team rebounded well for a runner-up finish. If it was not for a beaten up racecar, Harvick may have been able to get by Earnhardt in those closing laps. Still, we will take our loss and try to bounce back next week at Watkins Glen International. Both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series will be in action next week as we look to cash in on some exciting road racing.
