Early Saturday afternoon, the Craftsman Truck Series will wave the green flag for the Racetostopsuicide.com 200 at Kansas Speedway. Last week, the Truck Series kicked off their first race in the Chase at Bristol Motor Speedway in a race that produced trouble for several of the top contenders in the championship. Most notably, Layne Riggs’ points lead has been reduced to a mere 3 points over Kaden Honeycutt. In many ways, Riggs and Honeycutt were the two biggest favorites to contend for the championship this season but Chandler Smith and a few others are not out of the equation!

With plenty of racing remaining this season, the championship picture could easily flip again as the field tackles a very fast multi-groove 1.5-mile layout at Kansas. With high speeds and aerodynamics coming into play, Saturday’s 200-mile shootout will favor the organizations that have perfected their intermediate programs. The problem with that statement is that the Truck Series has not competed on a true 1.5 mile oval since early May at Texas. As a result, there are some questions surrounding how much speed has been gained or lost since the series last competed on an intermediate oval layout that does not produce heavy tire wear.

To add to those concerns, practice and qualifying sessions were rained out for the 2nd consecutive week on Friday. For that reason, the field will be set by the rulebook which coincidentally puts Nick Sanchez on the pole for Saturday’s race despite the fact that Sanchez will be making just his 3rd Truck Series’ start of the season. Additionally, Brent Crews (#5) will be making his first Truck Series start of the season and will also be starting from the top 5 due to the rulebook which combines last week’s finishing result and owner points. More importantly, many of the drivers that had trouble last week are on the wrong end of the rulebook metric which places 70% of the formula towards last week’s result. As a result, Chandler Smith, Layne Riggs, and Christian Eckes will be among the top championship contenders that will be starting deep into the field.

• Christian Eckes has finished 3rd or better in the last 3 races at Kansas.
• Gio Ruggiero finished 4th in his only start at Kansas last year.
• Kaden Honeycutt has finished 4th in 2 of the last 3 races at Kansas.
• Chandler Smith has finished 6th or better in 3 of 5 career starts at Kansas.
• Tanner Gray has finished 7th or better in 2 of the last 3 races at Kansas.
• Nick Sanchez has finished 8th or better in 3 of 4 career starts at Kansas.
• Grant Enfinger has finished 9th or better in 10 of 14 career starts at Kansas.
• Daniel Hemric has finished in the Top 10 in all 3 career starts at Kansas.
• Ben Rhodes has finished 10th or worse in 9 straight races at Kansas.

Betting Targets

In the prior two races this season on true 1.5 mile ovals, Layne Riggs and Kaden Honeycutt have been the two fastest drivers/trucks in each of those races among the Truck Series regulars. While that may not be surprising because both drivers are arguably the best two drivers on a weekly basis, Riggs dominated the race at Charlotte back in May despite the fact that TRICON Garage trucks have been slightly “faster” in terms of raw speed at these types of layouts. To be clear, I really wanted some confirmation bias from practice on Friday because so much time has passed since the series last competed at a 1.5 mile. Unfortunately, we did not get any on-track observations which lowers the confidence level going into Saturday.

With that said, Kansas Speedway is one of those venues that usually gets the best from the drivers. Kansas Speedway has wide sweeping turns that require a setup that will keep turning throughout the corner and a driver that can wheel the truck through the loose conditions. For that reason, I believe other top wheelmen like Chandler Smith and Christian Eckes will fight their way to the front and will possibly be in contention towards the end of 200 miles. Brent Crews and Nick Sanchez are in the equipment and have the talent to win this week. However, neither driver has had a lot of seat time in the trucks this year. With that said, I would expect Sanchez to be very aggressive and strong on Saturday due to his driving style. In terms of H2H bets, I like Gio Ruggiero and Grant Enfinger as sneaky plays based on their current betting odds.
