Sprint Cup Series drivers and teams participated in two practice sessions early Friday before rain washed out qualifying efforts. According to NASCAR rules in the event qualifying is cancelled, the starting lineup is determined by the weekend’s first practice speeds. As a result, rookie Kyle Larson will lead the field to the green flag Saturday night for 400 miles of racing at Richmond International Raceway.

Two of the early favorites for Saturday night’s race in Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch, will have overcome rather poor starting spots. Hamlin is scheduled to roll off 28th while Busch will roll off 19th based off practice times. The good news is practice speeds do not really hold a lot of weight especially this weekend when you consider the first practice session for the Toyota Owners 400 started early Friday morning for a race that will be run under the lights Saturday night. Needless to say, track conditions will be significantly different for drivers and teams once the green flag drops.

Two guys that did stand out in practices, for what it is worth, include both Joey Logano and Kasey Kahne. Logano and teammate Brad Keselowski have been fast all season so that may not be much of a surprise. Logano has never visited victory lane at Richmond but has a ton of momentum heading into Saturday night’s race. Kahne on the other hand has struggled severely this season and has yet to capture a top 5 finish. Kahne is a former Richmond winner but has sported a fairly poor 18.79 average finish through 20 career starts. Kahne has been getting some heat for his poor start thus far in 2014 so it will be interesting to see if he can respond with a strong performance as the #5 team starts to feel some pressure.

If you are looking for a longshot driver with potential, consider Ryan Newman. Newman has been impressive all season and nearly won the fall Richmond race last season. Newman also posted the fastest lap in Happy Hour and will roll off in the 18th position. While we did not pick Newman in our Toyota Owners 400 race picks, he deserves some attention. At near 35-1 odds, Newman has a ton of value as possible cover bet or standard wager. For the rest of our race picks, check out the drivers below as we look to continue adding to our bankroll!
