When Jeff Gordon started racing he was originally slated to use a different number than #24

What was the number and why did he change it?

Wasn't he #2 in Busch? I could be making it up and no idea why he changed it. I'll go with this fantasy memory and say cause rusty had #2.

What is the overall fastest lap speed in mph? (This is a number I've somehow always remembered)

Close. But I'm talking 3 digits after the decimal point.

When people talk about records that will never be broken, it's pretty much the only one that's impossible. Nascar will never go that fast again.

Was waiting for someone to get question 1

Google away if you like. Not sure the answer can be found easily anyway. Heard it mentioned by Ned Jarret in an old tv interview.

This fact wasn't revealed to the public until last year.

Wasn't it? Interview must not have been that old then.

Apparently as the Days Of Thunder movie people had some sort of licensing conflict with him using #46

Yes, that was the story with why they couldn't use the 46. They had it ready to go. Early 2015, a picture was tweeted out of the 46 car.

January 2015 was when the tweet was made.
