This Austin track has become an instant classic. In just about every F1 fan's top 5 favorite tracks now.

The Mercs walked away with it last year but over the 3 years races have been held here Red Bull is the team that seems to perform better than their average on the track.

Lewis won in 2014 but it was due to pit strategy allowing him to pass Rosberg who had taken pole and looked set to lead the entire race before the team tactics switched them.

Be wary of Rosberg doing extra well here if last years still stings at all.

Also, Renault have quietly rolled out a new spec engine for bot Red Bull and Torro Rosso. Not 100% sure how many of the 4 drivers will run it but Kyvat for sure so far.  Given the track suitability to the car and that 'wildcard' in the mix too I think its worth playing a few dollars on them at the lottery ticket prices for win and pole.

Fading Williams and also Ferrari a little. To be worse than their normal average this year on this track.

The present forecast is a high probability of thunderstorms for tomorrow which continue into Saturday when the likelihood of localised flooding is high. On Sunday rain is forecast to fall from Saturday’s predicted level of 2 inches to 0.5 inch, though rain is expected for most of the morning with showers following during the race.

Engine change sees both Ferrari drivers hit with 10-place grid penalties in Austin.

The news that Ferrari has opted to change the engines in both cars, which sees Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen on their fifth units of the season, will be a boost for Lewis Hamilton, whose only possible threat for the 2015 crown comes from the German and his countryman Nico Rosberg. Currently, Vettel is 66 points behind the Briton.

"Yes, we will have the hit of a ten-place penalty for a new engine at this event but it has always been the plan," Vettel told reporters. "It is not a big secret and no surprise for us. This was always the plan for us to have the strongest engine available at every single point in the season.

"If anything this is a very positive sign because we are pushing very hard and the guys have managed to make big steps in terms of performance," he added. This should not be understood as a downside."

More engine news.

Both Red Bull and Torro Rosso says they probably wont take a new spec engine this weekend as neither need to and it will cause a 10 place grid penalty like Ferrari.  In fact Ferrari taking the penalty might be why they chose not to this race.

Alonso is going to run a new spec Honda engine whilst Button uses an older one.  This will probably make Alonso a big fave in head to heads openers. So might be worth taking Button, betting that the new Honda will have a reliability issue.

First Friday practice session didn't tell us much as it was wet but drying the entire session.

Second session was called off due to lightning in area. (only in America!)

Practice 3 was wet too and didnt tell us much. The Red Bulls were a bit slower than expected and the Williams faster. But that could be more to do with track conditions and practice strategy than it normally is in P3.

Quali was rained out and will be run at 10.00am ET Sunday.

Race is at 3pm ET

So will finish 45 mins before the Cup race starts and wont clash for the first time this year   (yay)

sleep deficit here, didn't register that a US race meant a normal start time

used to the race being at 2 AM or 8 AM

although that would've been this morning anyway, not Monday morning
